Avon and Somerset Police have made a second arrest of independent MP Dan Norris as their investigation into alleged sexual offences continues to widen in scope.
The 66-year-old former West of England Mayor, who currently represents North East Somerset and Hanham, was taken into custody again following an investigation that police say began in December 2024.
Authorities have expanded their enquiries to include allegations from multiple women. Norris now faces investigation for the rape of two separate women, sexual assault of a third woman, and offences including voyeurism and upskirting involving several alleged victims. The timeframe for the alleged incidents spans from the 2000s through to the 2020s.
His initial arrest took place in April 2025, when officers detained him on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl, child abduction, and rape. Police have since discontinued their investigation into the child-related allegations and the abduction matter, focusing their resources on the adult sexual offence complaints.
Authorities are also examining potential misconduct in a public office. Norris continues to be released on conditional bail while enquiries progress.
The former Labour politician secured his parliamentary seat in the July 2024 general election, unseating high-profile Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg in a significant electoral upset. Following his first arrest, the Labour Party moved swiftly to suspend his membership.
Since April, Norris has not set foot in the House of Commons chamber, though parliamentary rules allow him to continue casting votes through proxy arrangements. He remains registered as an independent member.
At the time of his initial arrest, Norris was serving as mayor of the West of England. That position concluded when his term expired in May 2025, with Helen Godwin assuming the role.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police emphasized the sensitive nature of their ongoing work. “Investigations into sexual offences are sensitive and complex and as a result it can take a significant amount of time for enquiries to be completed,” they stated.
Officers confirmed they are maintaining regular contact with the alleged victims throughout the process. “We’re keeping victims updated on any developments and we’ll continue to give access to any support they may need,” the force said.
The police urged the public to refrain from speculation while their investigation remains active, requesting that enquiries continue without interference.
