Lidl has recalled chicken burgers from its shelves due to a labelling failure that could pose serious health risks to customers with celery allergies.
The supermarket chain has issued an urgent recall for Red Hen Gastro 2 Southern Fried Chicken Thigh Burgers after discovering that celery is not highlighted in bold on the ingredients list as required by food safety regulations. The 330g packs carrying all use-by dates are affected.
The Food Standards Agency has issued an Allergy Alert for the product. Lidl GB stated: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to celery, we advise you not to eat it.”
Customers who purchased the chicken burgers can return them to any Lidl GB store for a full refund without a receipt. The retailer is displaying notices in every store where the product was sold and has provided a customer care contact line on 0203 966 5566 or via email at customer.care@lidl.co.uk.
According to the NHS, celery allergy typically presents as pollen food syndrome, which involves hypersensitivity to raw fruits, vegetables and nuts. Symptoms usually include itching of the mouth, lips and throat. Severe breathing difficulties are rare.
The recall comes just days after Lidl issued another urgent warning to customers over its Snaktastic Multigrain Bites Sour Cream & Black Pepper multipacks. The 150g packs, which contain six 25g bags, have been recalled due to potential foil contamination that poses a choking hazard.
The affected crisps carry batch code 207 345 and a best-before date of 4 April. Lidl urged customers who purchased the Snaktastic crisps not to eat them and to return them for a full refund.
