A murder investigation has been launched after a man was fatally stabbed in the centre of Wimbledon in the early hours of Sunday morning, with a suspect already in custody.
Officers, paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance all attended the scene on The Broadway at around 12:37am following reports of a stabbing. The victim, a man in his 40s, was found with stab wounds and treated at the scene, but died shortly after emergency services arrived. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Following urgent enquiries, police located and arrested a man in his 30s later the same night on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody. The Met said the incident is being treated as isolated and that detectives are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.
Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley said: “This is a shocking act of violence in the heart of a busy town, and we understand the impact this will have on the local community. While we have made an arrest, we still need anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. No detail is too small.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Met.
