A Metropolitan Police officer has been dismissed from the force following a misconduct hearing that found he had sexually assaulted a woman while off duty at a pub in central London.
PC Jason Capery, who served with the Central West Basic Command Unit, was found to have breached professional standards at a hearing held on Tuesday 10 March. The panel heard that Capery behaved inappropriately toward a woman known to him during an off-duty visit to a pub in Marylebone.
Capery had already admitted his guilt in criminal proceedings, pleading guilty to sexual assault by touching at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 4 February. He was subsequently sentenced on 6 March to a 12-month community order and ordered to pay court costs of £199. Following the criminal outcome, the misconduct panel concluded his conduct was incompatible with remaining in the police service and dismissed him from the Met.
Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah, who leads policing across central west London, said Capery’s behaviour fell well below the standards the Metropolitan Police expects of its serving officers. She said women deserve to feel safe in London and that maintaining high standards of conduct is a requirement for all officers at all times.
“There is no place for inappropriate behaviour within the Met,” she said, adding that the force is working to ensure anyone who fails to meet those standards is removed.
The case is the latest in a series of disciplinary actions taken against Metropolitan Police officers in recent years as the force faces continued pressure to address conduct issues within its ranks.
