A 13-year-old former student has been arrested following a knife attack at his old school that injured two boys who are now recovering in hospital.
The suspect walked into Kingsbury High School in Brent around 12:30pm Tuesday and went straight to a first-floor classroom. Upon entering, he sprayed a substance at one pupil before stabbing a 13-year-old boy inside the room.
He then ran through corridors and down stairs, attacking a 12-year-old boy with a knife on his way out of the building. Both stabbing victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries but are now stable and expected to survive.
A third boy who was sprayed is also being treated as a victim, though the substance caused no injuries and was not dangerous.
Armed police flooded the school immediately after the 12:39pm emergency call and began hunting for the attacker. The suspect remained at large for hours until a member of the public spotted a child at a mosque in the NW10 area and called police at 4:15pm.
Officers arrested the teenager at the mosque on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody.
Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation but has not declared the incident a terrorist attack. Detective Chief Superintendent Helen Flanagan said detectives are exploring several possible motives and keeping an open mind.
Police have searched three locations – two homes connected to the suspect and the mosque where he was found. The mosque has no link to the attack and staff there have cooperated fully with investigators.
Detectives are reviewing school CCTV footage, examining seized devices, and interviewing 30 to 40 witnesses using specialist officers trained to work with children.
The suspect is a British national born in the UK. Police will not release further details about him because of his age.
Investigators believe he acted alone and are not searching for anyone else.
