A 43-year-old woman has been taken into police custody after an 18-day-old baby girl died following an incident at a residential property in Central London on Saturday morning.
Metropolitan Police officers were called to Horseferry Road in Westminster at approximately 7.30am on March 14 after reports that an infant had fallen from a height. The baby was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The woman, arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, remains in custody as detectives lead an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is heading the Metropolitan Police inquiry, said officers believe the incident took place within a domestic context. She described the death of an infant as “an extremely tragic occurrence” and confirmed that enquiries are ongoing.
The Met is now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference 1596/14MAR.
