A murder investigation in the heart of Westminster has taken a significant step forward after two men were arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man near a busy central London street.
The victim, named by police as Farmanullah Sherzad, was found with multiple stab wounds on Abbey Orchard Street, SW1, shortly after 10pm on Friday 27 March. Officers arrived within minutes of being called and began administering first aid before the London Ambulance Service transported him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination subsequently confirmed that his death was caused by multiple sharp force trauma injuries.
Two men — aged 18 and 21 — have since been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody as enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, who is leading the investigation, described the arrests as marking significant progress in what he characterised as a fast-moving and complex case. He confirmed that Sherzad’s family had been informed and that officers are continuing to support them through what he described as a devastating loss.
In response to the incident, Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the Abbey Orchard Street area, with officers made available to speak with local residents who have concerns about safety in the vicinity.
Detectives are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who holds details that could assist the investigation. Those with information are asked to call 101 quoting CAD 8270/27MAR, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or submit information through the Major Incident Public Portal.
