Shoppers across Wales are being urged to check their local supermarket opening hours before heading out this May Bank Holiday Monday, with most major chains running on reduced trading times.
Most of the country’s biggest retailers — including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Aldi — will close earlier than usual, while some smaller convenience stores and petrol station forecourts are expected to keep closer to standard hours.
Tesco branches across Wales, which usually trade until midnight, will operate from 8am to 6pm on Monday. Tesco Express outlets are expected to keep longer hours, opening from 6am and closing between 10pm and 11pm depending on the location.
Asda’s larger stores will mostly run from 8am to 10pm, although a number of branches across Wales are expected to remain open 24 hours. Customers are advised to check the supermarket’s online store finder before travelling.
Morrisons stores in Wales will trade from 7am to 8pm, two hours shorter than their usual closing time of 10pm. The chain’s petrol stations are expected to keep slightly longer hours of 8am to 10pm.
Sainsbury’s superstores will operate from 8am to 8pm, while its smaller convenience branches will follow longer hours of around 7am to 11pm. Both Lidl and Aldi will broadly run from 8am to 8pm — with Aldi closing roughly three hours earlier than its usual time.
The Co-op, by contrast, will largely maintain its standard hours of 7am to 10pm or 11pm, depending on the branch.
For shoppers heading to Marks and Spencer or Waitrose, opening times will vary more widely. Most Waitrose stores in Wales will operate from 8am to 8pm, while Little Waitrose branches and those at service stations are expected to trade from 7am to 10pm. M&S Food hours differ across the UK, and customers are encouraged to check their nearest store directly.
With opening times subject to local variation, shoppers are being reminded to confirm details online before setting out, to avoid a wasted trip.
