A former British Transport Police officer would have been dismissed without notice following findings that he used his position to engage in sexual activity while on duty, a misconduct hearing has concluded.
Former Police Sergeant Nathan Dumble faced allegations that he breached standards of professional behaviour after meeting women through a website called Fab Swingers. The two-day hearing was held in his absence in London on 5 and 6 January.
According to the allegations, Mr Dumble visited a woman’s property while on duty, wearing his full uniform but with his high-visibility vest turned inside out to conceal his identification numbers. Once there, he engaged in what was described as ‘consensual non-consent’ sexual intercourse with her.
A second allegation concerned communications with another woman on the same website, during which the former officer sent a photograph of himself in full uniform with the intention of arranging a sexual encounter.
Both allegations were found proven by the Independent Panel, which determined that his actions amounted to gross misconduct. The Panel concluded that had he not already resigned from the force, he would have been dismissed without notice.
Detective Superintendent Brett Walker, Head of BTP’s Professional Standards Department, said: “Former PS Dumble abused his role as a police officer for his own sexual gratification and did so while he was supposed to be on duty keeping the public safe.”
He added: “He went to great lengths to keep his wholly unacceptable behaviour from ever coming to light, hiding his police identification numbers when he went to the woman’s property.”
Detective Superintendent Walker emphasised that the force expects the highest standards from its officers. “We are as determined as ever to hold people like former PS Dumble to account,” he stated. “I fully support the decision of the independent Panel in this case.“
