Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s specialist crime division are searching two properties linked to Lord Mandelson as part of an ongoing investigation into potential misconduct in public office relating to his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Officers attended addresses in Wilcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, and in Camden on Friday morning to execute search warrants. The 72-year-old former cabinet minister has not been arrested, with the Met confirming enquiries remain ongoing.
Central Specialist Crime Team Leading Investigation
The Met’s Central Specialist Crime division is handling the investigation, which focuses on alleged misconduct in public office offences. This specialist unit typically deals with complex and sensitive investigations involving serious allegations against individuals in positions of authority or public trust.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hayley Sewart confirmed that officers were carrying out searches at the two addresses but provided limited details about the specific nature of the investigation. The force stated the searches are connected to the ongoing probe but did not elaborate on what evidence investigators are seeking or what specific conduct is under examination.
The decision not to arrest Mandelson at this stage suggests police are gathering evidence through the property searches before determining whether sufficient grounds exist to take the investigation to the next phase. Under English law, search warrants require judicial authorization and must demonstrate reasonable grounds to believe that evidence of an offence will be found at the specified locations.
Epstein Files Trigger Fresh Scrutiny
The investigation comes amid renewed scrutiny of Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein following the release of files documenting their contact. The Epstein files have placed fresh focus on the extent and nature of their association during the period when Epstein faced criminal charges.
The timing of the searches indicates police are examining whether any conduct connected to that relationship may constitute misconduct in public office, an offence that requires proof that a public official abused their position in a way that amounted to a breach of duty.
Dual Property Search Strategy
The simultaneous searches at both the Wiltshire and Camden properties suggest investigators are seeking comprehensive evidence across Mandelson’s known addresses. The Wilcot property in Wiltshire served as one location whilst the Camden address in London represented the second search site.
Executing warrants at multiple locations simultaneously is standard practice in complex investigations to prevent the destruction or movement of evidence between properties once suspects become aware of police interest.
Investigation Continues
With enquiries described as ongoing and no arrest made, the investigation appears to be at an evidence-gathering stage. The Met has not provided a timeline for when the investigation might conclude or whether additional searches or interviews are planned.
The force’s decision to confirm the searches publicly whilst limiting details about the specific allegations reflects the sensitivity of the investigation and legal restrictions on what can be disclosed while enquiries continue.
