Detectives are hunting for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal collision that killed a young moped rider in Kingston town centre.
Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the late-night incident on Wood Street, or motorists with dashcam footage from the area, to come forward as they work to trace the vehicle involved.
The fatal collision occurred at the junction of Wood Street and Horse Fair shortly before midnight on Saturday, 7 February. Emergency services were called to the scene at 23:37hrs following reports of a crash between a car and a moped.
Despite the response from paramedics and police, the 22-year-old moped rider was pronounced dead at the location. His family are now being supported by specialist officers trained in bereavement liaison.
The other vehicle involved in the collision has been described only as dark-coloured. Its driver left the scene immediately following the impact and has not yet been identified by police.
Metropolitan Police confirmed no arrests have been made in connection with the incident as the investigation continues.
Detectives from the force’s serious collision investigation unit are now examining the circumstances surrounding the crash and are working to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the young man’s death.
The appeal for information comes as officers piece together what happened in those crucial moments on one of Kingston’s main thoroughfares. The junction where the collision took place sits in a busy part of the town centre, raising hopes that witnesses or passing vehicles may have captured crucial evidence.
Authorities are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was in the Wood Street area around the time of the collision, even if they did not directly witness the impact itself. Officers say information about vehicles seen leaving the area shortly after 23:37hrs could prove vital to the investigation.
Police are also keen to obtain any dashcam or mobile phone footage that may have been recorded in the vicinity during the relevant timeframe.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD 8352/07FEB26. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can instead call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which guarantees complete anonymity for callers providing information about crimes.
