A 47-year-old man’s body was discovered more than two weeks after the vehicle collision that killed him, despite extensive search operations on the night of the incident involving specialist dogs and a police helicopter.
Garry Peterson from Canvey Island was eventually found on Saturday 18 October during targeted searches by Metropolitan Police officers in Launders Lane, Rainham, sixteen days after the fatal crash occurred.
The discovery followed contact from Essex Police on Friday 16 October regarding a missing person report, which prompted investigators to conduct proactive searches of the area surrounding the collision site.
Peterson had been involved in a single-vehicle incident on Thursday 2 October at approximately 19:45 when his blue 2008 Peugeot 207 crashed at the A1306 junction with Launders Lane.
Emergency services conducted thorough searches of the surrounding area immediately after the collision, deploying specialist search dogs and the police helicopter to locate anyone who might have been in the vehicle.
Despite the comprehensive search efforts on the night of the crash, no one was found at the scene. The damaged Peugeot was recovered while officers continued their enquiries into the circumstances of the incident.
Detective Constable Fayyadh Alwi from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath confirmed officers are supporting Peterson’s family following the tragic discovery.
“Our thoughts remain with them,” DC Alwi stated, whilst emphasizing the investigation into the collision circumstances is ongoing.
Investigators are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the October collision or has relevant information to contact police, particularly anyone with dashcam footage from the junction area that evening.
“Please come forward if you can help,” DC Alwi urged members of the public who may have been travelling through the area on the night of 2 October.
Witnesses can contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference 7538/2Oct25, or submit information through the Metropolitan Police online reporting portal at https://www.met.police.uk/report.
